Highlands

Summary Information

The Highlands has a population of 214,000 covering a land area of 26,484 sq km, which is 33% of Scotland and 11.4% of Great Britain.  The Highlands is 10 times larger than Luxenbourg, 20% larger than Wales and nearly the size of Belgium.  The length of the coastline is 4,905km - 21% of the Scottish total.

With its outstanding geography, geology and culture it is one of the most attractive areas to live in and to visit.

However that coastline with its vast areas of unique and protected habitats is vulnerable.  Many vessels with a variety of cargoes transit these shores with ensuing risks.  The area is subject to the vagaries of extreme weather.  These are numerous installations including nuclear, with offsite consequences should an accident occur.
